“ In the early and middle part of the Nineteenth Century the New Jersey Sand Hill Band of Indians descendants were largely found in the northern counties of Warren, Morris, Sussex and Passaic--- and in the two more southerly counties, Monmouth and adjacent Burlington.
The younger generation of Sand Hill Indians lacked the zeal of their parents to hold the tribe together, and as the children grew up they left the community to seek better economic opportunities elsewhere. As the old generation passed away there were few left who knew the “old” traditions and customs of the tribe. In 1949 the tribe had about thirty-two elders.
Today, the descendants of the Sand Hill Band of Indians and other Delaware-Cherokee marriages may be found in New York and Pennsylvania, as well as in New Jersey.”
